King of the kicks

Our founder/head coach, Tim Schmidt was interviewed in the The West Australian about Shannon Hurn’s kicking technique leading up to his 300th AFL game for the West Coast Eagles.

He talks about how Hurn guides the ball down to his foot really well which comes from having great control of the ball. Also, how he generates so much power, not from effort, but from his technique and how well he times the ball.

“He has really good control of his ball drop,” Schmidt says.

“His grip on the ball is fantastic and he guides the football down to his foot really well. You get a lot of players who bring the ball out or bring the ball up but don’t really guide the ball to their foot and they release it around hip height which increases the variables.

“When Shannon releases the ball, there’s not actually that much of a gap between his hand and foot.

“There’s minimal chance of error but it also increases his timing which produces a better connection. Better timing equals more power and distance.”
