AFL kicking expert Tim Schmidt breaks down Jye Amiss’ technique as Fremantle forward struggles for confidence in front of goal

Our founder Tim Schmidt chats with Eliza Reilly from Code Sports regarding Fremantle’s key forward Jye Amiss’ recent inaccuracy in front of the goals.

After watching Jye’s numerous games and shots for goals (both the ones he kicked and missed), Tim believes his momentum through the ball was the biggest area for improvement.

“He needs to generate a bit more momentum through the ball. At the moment, he’s basically walking in and trying to kick 45m.

If you’re kicking on the run and you keep your momentum going through the ball, you tend to have a much better success rate. Goalkicking shouldn’t be any different.”

This isn’t just specific to Jye, Tim feels this key component is missed by most of the AFL players kicking for goal.

Why do we want momentum through the ball?
- Better connection
- More power
- Helps keep in line with the goals

All of this improves accuracy.
